Wedding rings for Muslim couples

Question

Is it permissible for Muslim married couples to use wedding rings, or if it is permissible for a man to use ring. Secondly, I have seeing some Muslims especially in America plaiting their hair, what is the Islamic point on view on this

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

While investigating the matter, we came across one of the standard wedding ceremonies in Protestant church. This ceremony shows that wearing a wedding ring is a part of the religious ceremonies. The text that a celebrant recites at this occasion is as follows: “Bless, O Lord, these rings as symbols of the vows by which this man and this woman have bound themselves to each other; through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Muslim jurists have clearly mentioned that imitating non-Muslims in their religious rituals is forbidden, and a severe threat is reported in a Prophetic narration in this regard; The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam , said: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them." [Ahmad]

Therefore, wearing a wedding ring is equally forbidden for both men and women.

As for plaiting hair, it is allowed for women as we mentioned in Fatwa 87021.

In principal it is allowed for a man to plait his hair as it is confirmed that the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, did so. Umm Haani may Allaah be pleased with her said, “When the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, entered Makkah, he had four braids.” [Ahmad, Abu Dawood, At-Tirmithi and Ibn Maajah] This is in principle, but it is a known fact that this practice, nowadays, has become a common practice and a symbol for dissolute persons. Therefore, we are of the opinion that plaiting hair is not allowed for men to avoid imitating them.

Allaah Knows best.
