Fatwa CenterFasting of a woman who sees spots of blood after 60 days of delivery
Question
A woman had spots of blood after having post-partum bleeding for two months and attaining purity. Should she fast or not? What should she do?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu 'alyhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen 
said: "The problems with women with regard to menstruation and post-partum bleeding are countless and one of the reasons for this is the use of contraceptive pills. Generally, people did not encounter these problems in the past. Although such problems have not ceased to occur since the time of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, or rather since the beginning of creation, the profusion of such problems these days is something very unfortunate. The basic rule is that if a woman attains purity and sees the white discharge that women know of, then any brownish or yellowish discharge or spots that they experience after this is not menstruation and would not prevent women from praying, fasting or having sexual intercourse. Umm ‘Atiyyah 
said, “We would not consider the yellowish or brownish discharge (as anything).” [Al-Bukhari] The narration of Abu Daawood adds, “after purity.” [Saheeh (Authentic)] Accordingly, we say that anything that takes place after confirmed purity has no harm and would not prevent women from praying, fasting or having sexual intercourse. However, women should not be hasty before seeing the white discharge. Some women perform Ghusl (ritual bathing) as soon as the bleeding stops and before they see the white discharge. This is why the wives of the Companions 
would send a piece of cotton with traces of blood to ‘Aa’ishah and she would tell them not to be hasty and to wait until they saw the white discharge."
