Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The Scholars of Tafseer (i.e. interpretation of the Quran) may Allaah have mercy upon them mentioned that the verse of Mubaahalah number 61 of Surah Aal-Imraan [Quran 3] was revealed about the Christians of Najraan when they came to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and started to argue with him about ‘Eesa (Jesus) may Allaah exalt his mention. So, the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) called them to the Mubaahalah, which means to invoke the curse of Allaah upon the liar amongst them. For more details, please refer to Fatwa 156899.

The verse is evidence that Allaah ordered His Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) to invoke the curse on those who denied the truth about ‘Eesa may Allaah exalt his mention after the evidence has been established against them. Mubaahalah means that those who are mentioned in the verse should be brought, as they are both parties' beloved and close relatives, and both parties would seek the curse of Allaah on the liar amongst them. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 88504.

What is meant from this is to urge them to acknowledge the truth or to stop arguing (about ‘Eesa may Allaah exalt his mention), so they stopped. Muhammad Ibn Is-haaq may Allaah have mercy upon him who is the author of the book entitled As-Seerah (Biography of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )) mentioned that a man amongst them whose name was Al-‘Aaqib – and who was a rational man – said to them: “I swear by Allaah, O Christians that you indeed know that Muhammad is a sent Messenger, and he brought you the details about your Companion (meaning their Prophet ‘Eesa may Allaah exalt his mention), and you know that there is absolutely no people who invoked the curse on a Prophet except that they were completely destroyed – the young people amongst them as well as the old ones – so if you were to invoke the curse you would be all destroyed. Hence, if you do not see except to stick to your religion and hold to your view about your Companion (i.e. ‘Eesa may Allaah exalt his mention), then you should reconcile with that man [i.e. with the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )] and return to your country. So, they came to the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and said: "O, Abu Al-Qaasim, we decided not to invoke the curse of Allaah upon you and we will leave you on your religion and we will return whence we come from with our religion…”
