Piercing in lips and nose

Question

what ruling applies to a woman who has had her lips pierced and nose for beautification purpose and for her husband and she where niqab in front of her non-mahrams....jazakumullahu kheiran

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We have already issued Fataawa 92395, 85912 and 83211 clarifying that it is permissible for a woman to pierce her ears and nose for the purpose of beautification.

With regard to piercing the lip, then we have not come across any statement of the scholars in this regard. In principle, this is forbidden as it involves pain and it is a kind of deformation of the creation, so one should not resort to it except for a necessity.

Nonetheless, if Muslim women are used to beautifying themselves with it, then this is permissible, drawing inference from the permissibility of piercing the ears and nose. This is permissible provided there is a dire need for doing so, (i.e., beautifying oneself), and if this does not cause any harm, as the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "There should be neither harm nor reciprocal harm.

It was based on this meaning (i.e., a dire need) that Shaykh Ibn Al-‘Uthaymeen may Allaah have mercy upon him permitted the piercing of the nose while stating that he did not come across any statements of the scholars in this regard. He said, “As regards the piercing of the nose, there are no statements of the scholars about it, but it is a deformation to the creation in our view, and it might be that other scholars are not of this opinion. So, if a woman is in a country where piercing the nose is a form of beautification, then it is permissible for her to pierce her nose in order to put an ornament on it.

As regards a woman covering her face before non-Mahram men, then this is an obligation in all cases, i.e. whether or not there is adornment on her face. This obligation is stressed even more if there is an adornment on it.

For more benefit on the ruling of covering the face for women, please refer to Fataawa 83033 and 83702.

Allaah Knows best.
