Using semi-tattoo procedure to hide baldness

Question

Assalam Alaikum Wa Rah Wa Bar, I am the Sheikh/Imam at Masjid Preston, I have a question requesting clarification. There is system called semi hair tattooing for balding men. Your hair must be shaved or trimmed short for the system to look good. The system is used to fix defects in the skull from surgery and also to give the impression that someone has a full head of hair. Its a semi tattoo procedure and fixes a defect in balding men and women. Their website is GoodLookInk.com Please Add some clarification to this matter as we are aware of Ahadiths concerning tattoos. There is a boy who has been going bald since teens and he wants to get this procedure done to fix the look of his lost hair. This boy has stated that His future wife will not marry him unless He does something for his hair. Jazak Allahu Khairan

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Tattooing is Islamically forbidden because the Sharee’ah texts prohibit it and because the scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them stated that the limb on which the tattoo is done becomes impure.

Moreover, tattooing is among the grave major sins because the person who does it is cursed, as we clarified in Fatwa 82394. The same ruling applies to both men and women, rather the prohibition for men is more stressed as stated by An-Nafraawi may Allaah have mercy upon him in his commentary on the Risaalah (treatise) of Ibn Abi Zayd (on Maaliki Fiqh).

As regards baldness and the like, then one may look for a way of treating it without resorting to tattooing, like using permanent dye whose ingredients do not contain an impurity, or by implanting hair in its place, as this is permissible in case of necessity. Indeed, the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) permitted the person who had his nose cut off to replace it with a golden nose, as in the Hadeeth reported by Abu Daawood may Allaah have mercy upon him in his Sunan. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 87848.

Concerning tattooing, one should not resort to it unless there is no other alternative for treatment, and provided that what is to be treated by it is harmful or deforming one’s appearance; in which case, there is no objection to using it in treating deformity, Allaah willing, because necessities make permissible what is prohibited. Allaah Says (what means): {He has explained in detail to you what He has forbidden you, excepting that to which you are compelled.}[Quran 6:119]

Allaah Knows best.
