Question
Is jailbreaking an iphone or jailbreaking Windows permissible?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
These programs and the likes of them are private financial rights of their makers; they alone are entitled to dispose of the software by selling them or permitting their usage. Therefore, no one has the right to violate these rights by jail-breaking, copying or downloading the programs without the permission of their makers. There is no difference in this regard whether the program makers are Muslims or non-Muslims or whether the person who copies them needs them or not.
