Naming one's daughter Hoor Al-‘Een

Question

asalam alakkum can we keep our girl baby name hoorulain and that affect her character

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The view we adopt here on our site is that it is permissible to name a girl Hoor Al-‘Een. Hoor is the plural of Hawraa’, which means a young beautiful woman with fair skin and very dark eyes. Zayd ibn Aslam said that a Hawraa’ is an attractive (eye-catching) woman and ‘Een are women with beautiful eyes.

We do not believe that this name will adversely affect the character of the girl in the future because its meaning is good and it indicates something desirable, and some of the women Companions had such names like, Jameelah and Bahiyyah (which both mean beautiful).

Nonetheless, our advice to you is to name your daughter after the Mothers of the Believers, the daughters of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, and other female Companions and wives of the righteous predecessors, such as Faatimah, ‘Aa’ishah, Khadeejah, Maryam, Zaynab and the like, as this is better and more complete.

Allaah Knows best.
