Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We did not find any text that explicitly states that the people of ‘Aad, to whom Prophet Hood (Hud) may Allaah exalt his mention was sent, were the first to commit Shirk (idolatry) after the people of Nooh (Noah). However, the Quran says that they were made successors to the people of Nooh. Allaah, The Exalted, says (what means): {And remember when He made you successors after the people of Noah and increased you in stature extensively.} [Quran 7:69]

Tafseer scholars said that the people of ‘Aad were the first to be destroyed after the people of Nooh. At-Taahir ibn ‘Aashoor may Allaah have mercy upon him said in his Tafseer: "The people of ‘Aad were the first nation to be destroyed after the people of Nooh." However, this does not necessarily mean that they were the first to commit Shirk after the people of Nooh; perhaps there were other people between them whom we do not know about. Allaah, The Exalted, says (what means): {And the people of Noah – when they denied the messengers, We drowned them, and We made them for mankind a sign. And We have prepared for the wrongdoers a painful punishment.* And [We destroyed] ‘Aad and Thamood and the companions of the well and many generations between them.} [Quran 25:37-38]

Ibn Katheer may Allaah have mercy upon him said: "Allaah, The Exalted, says (what means): {…and many generations between them.} [Quran 25:38] This means, 'many communities, many more than have been mentioned here, whom We destroyed.' Therefore, Allaah says (what means): {And for each We presented examples [as warnings], and each We destroyed with [total] destruction.} [Quran 25:39] It means, 'We showed them the proof and gave them clear evidence,' as Qataadah may Allaah have mercy upon him said, 'They had no excuse.' {…and each We destroyed with [total] destruction}, i.e. 'We destroyed them completely.' This is like the verse that reads (what means): {And how many have We destroyed from the generations after Nooh...} [Quran 17:17] The word 'generations' (Arabic: Quroon) here refers to communities among mankind. This is like the verse that reads (what means): {Then We produced after them other generations.} [Quran 23:42]" [Tafseer Ibn Katheer]

Allaah Knows best.
