Wind incontinence during prayer

Question

I have sporadic incontinence (breaking wind) and became Ma'zoor (excused) during Fajr time. So I performed ablution and started praying. During the prayer, I broke wind and thought to myself that my ablution is invalid, and immediately after that, I remembered that I am a Ma'zoor and completed the prayer. Is my prayer valid?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The prayer of the person who is excused due to wind incontinence is not invalidated by passing wind, even if it passes during prayer. The Fatwa of the Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Fatwas reads, “The basic principle is that passing wind invalidates ablution, but if a person passes wind continuously, then he has to perform ablution for each prayer when he wants to pray, then if he passed wind during the prayer, his prayer is not invalidated. He should carry on with his prayer until he completes it. This is a concession granted by Allah to make things easier for His slaves and relieve their hardship. Allah, The Exalted, says (what means):

- {Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship.} [Quran 2:185]

- {He has chosen you and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty.} [Quran 22:78]”

Hence, your prayer is valid, Allah willing, and passing wind during the prayer does not invalidate it as long as you are excused due to incontinence of wind and having no control over it. Lastly, we would like to warn you against falling prey to Waswaas (obsessive whisperings) in this regard.

Allah knows best.
