Fatwa CenterMen wearing wig because of hair loss
Question
Assalaamu alaykum. What is the ruling on using wigs and a custom-fit hair prosthesis for men who suffer hair loss? Is it the same even for non-human hair? May Allaah reward you.
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad 
is His slave and Messenger.
We did not exactly understand what you mean by a custom-fit hair prosthesis. It appears that this is made from hair, like a skullcap. If this is the case, then both of them – we mean the wig and the custom-fit hair prosthesis – are not considered forbidden extensions of hair; rather, it is just wearing it (on the head), as per the view of the Maaliki School.
The commentary of An-Nafraawi on Ar-Risaalah reads, “Women are forbidden from extending their hair... but if they put it on their head without joining it (to their original hair), then it is permissible, as stated by Al-Qaadhi 'Iyaadh.”
In addition to it not being considered as extending one's hair, it is not considered changing Allah’s creation.
In our view, nothing entails preventing a man from it as well. However, since some scholars are contrary to this view and consider the wig to be forbidden extension of hair, then it is better to avoid it in order to be on the safe side. For more benefit, please refer to fatwas 90912 and 292585.
The problem which remains now is whether this wig is particularly worn by women, in which case it is forbidden for a man to wear it because it is forbidden for men to imitate women, as seen in the hadeeth reported by Al-Bukhari and narrated by Ibn ‘Abbaas, may Allah be pleased with him, who said, “The Prophet cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men.” Cursing necessitates prohibition; rather, it necessitates considering this act as a grave, major sin.
Finally, it is not permissible to use the hair of a human being; the Kuwaiti Fiqh Encyclopedia reads, “The jurists (scholars of Fiqh) agreed that it is not permissible to benefit from the hair of a human being by selling it or using it because a human being is honored, as Allah says (what means): {And We have certainly honored the children of Aadam (Adam).} [Quran 17:70] Therefore, it is not permissible that any part of his body be treated with disrespect.”
