Calling Mus-haf ‘Quran Shareef’

Question

Assalaamu alaykum. Is it allowed to call the Mushaf (physical copy of the Quran) 'Quran Shareef'? I read somewhere that it is not allowed to say this and that we should say 'Quran Kareem' or 'Quran Majeed' and so on only.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

There is nothing wrong with describing the Quran as Quran Shareef (honorable) or informing about the Quran by saying so, and the same goes for other descriptions by which veneration is intended, such as Al-Kareem (noble), Al-Majeed (glorious), Al-‘Atheem (magnificent), and Al-‘Azeez (well-fortified respected).

Ibn 'Uthaymeen may Allaah have mercy upon him while describing the Quran as the most authentic document when interpreting the saying of Allah (which means): {[It is] a true promise [binding] upon Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Quran.} [Quran 9:111], said in Riyaadh As-Saaliheen, “The Quran is the most authentic of documents; it is a document that is written in the Torah, the Bible and the Quran; there is nothing that is more authentic than it. Allah mentioned the Torah, the Bible, and the Quran because they are the most authentic books revealed to the Messengers. The Quran is the most honorable (Shareef) amongst them, then the Torah, and then the Bible.” He said in another place, “The Quran is more honorable (Shareef) and greater…

Therefore, there is nothing wrong with describing the Quran and informing about it with the respected descriptions that indicate glorification and veneration.

Allah knows best.
