Hadeeth on virtue of Aayat Al-Kursi

Question

Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuhu, Shaykh. It was narrated from Abu Hurairah, may Allaah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, “In Soorat Al-Baqarah, there is a verse which is the best of all the verses of the Quran. It is never recited in a house but that the devil leaves it: Aayat Al-Kursi.” I read this hadith and wish to know its authenticity and in which Hadith book it is found. May Allaah reward you, Shaykh.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

The hadeeth mentioned in the question was narrated by Al-Haakim and others. Al-Haakim classified it as saheeh (sound). Ath-Thahabi did not declare it authentic or inauthentic in his book At-Talkhees. Al-Albaani classified it as weak in his book Dha‘eef At-Targheeb wa At-Tarheeb.

The wording of the hadeeth as reported by Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, is as follows, “The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, ‘In Soorah Al-Baqarah, there is a verse which is the best of all the verses of the Quran. It is never recited in a house in which there is a devil but that he leaves it. It is Aayat Al-Kursi (Quran 2:255).

There are many authentic ahaadeeth about the virtue and merit of Aayat Al-Kursi'; for instance, Ubayy ibn Ka‘b, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:

The Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, ‘O Abul-Munthir! Do you know which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest?’ I said, ‘Allah and His Messenger know best.’ He again asked, ‘O Abul-Munthir! Do you know which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest?’ I said, ‘{Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living...} [Quran 2:255] ’Thereupon, he, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, patted me on the chest and said, ‘By Allah, you shall rejoice by this knowledge, O Abul-Munthir!’” [Muslim]

The following hadeeth is one of the ahaadeeth about the merits of Soorah Al-Baqarah in general: Abu Umaamah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported, “I heard the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, say, ‘...Recite Soorah Al-Baqarah, for to take recourse to it is a blessing, and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it.” [Muslim]

Allah knows best.
