Ruling on Indian 'Solah Shringar'

Question

Is 'Solah Shringar' lawful in Islam? I am from India, where I see almost all of the Muslim brides do some or almost all of the 16 'Shringar', which all Hindu brides follow. My question is simple: all of the Muslim Indian girls follow this, and my wife and mother and all relatives from old to young have a nose ring; is it lawful in islam?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is appropriate to remind you here of a general rule by which one can issue a ruling on many customs of the people, which is that in principle all customs are permissible and nothing is forbidden from them except if there is an Islamic reason. For instance, if they involve a forbidden matter, such as being related to certain beliefs, such as bringing luck, bringing happiness, and expelling demons, then they are among the habits of Jaahilyyah (the Pre-Islamic era of ignorance) and are forbidden for this reason. The same goes if they involve imitating non-Muslims in matters that are peculiar to them, and not in a habit that is common between them and the Muslims. As regards a woman wearing earrings in her nose, then this is permissible, as we have already explained in fatwa 85723.

Allah knows best.
