Bleeding during pregnancy

Question

My wife was confirmed pregnant by a doctor after missing her period for about ten days. A few days later, she started bleeding continously for almost eight days today, and it is still going. Is she supposed to consider it as her menses and stop praying? Or should she consider it Istihaadhah (bleeding outside the menstrual period) and pray?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

As long as your wife has verified her pregnancy, the most likely correct view (of the two scholarly views in this regard) is the opinion held by the majority of scholars and which we adopt at Islamweb; that the pregnant woman does not menstruate (does not get her period). Hence, her bleeding is considered Istihaadhah. Accordingly, she may pray and fast, and she is required to perform ablution for every obligatory prayer after its time becomes due, and she can perform whatever obligatory and voluntary prayers she wishes with this ablution until the time of that prayer expires. If her non-menstrual bleeding usually ceases for a short period of time that is enough to perform ablution and pray, she is obliged to wait for this time when her bleeding stops, perform ablution, and pray.
