The Prayer of a Man in a Place Where There Is a Woman

Question

Assalamu haleikum,
i pray fajr when my mom sleeps in my room,is my salat valid cause i sleep with her,she doesn't lead me in prayer i pray myself alone.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Your prayer is valid and there is no problem about the validity of the prayer of a man in a place where there is a woman, whether it is his mother or anybody else. Indeed, the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) used to pray in one room where there was ‘Aa’ishah may Allaah be pleased with her.

‘Aa’ishah may Allaah be pleased with her narrated: “I used to sleep in front of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and my feet were in the direction of his Qiblah. When he prostrated, he nudged me and I drew up my feet, then when he stood up, I stretched them out again. And there were no lamps in the houses at the time.” [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

Al-Bukhaari may Allaah have mercy upon him entitled a Chapter in his book: ‘The Chapter of Optional Prayer Behind a Woman’…. Then he mentioned the above Hadeeth.

However, a man should be keen on performing the Fajr prayer and other obligatory prayers in the mosque, as the reward is greater.

Some scholars of Fiqh held the view that the prayer in the mosque is obligatory and that whoever does not perform it in the mosque without a sound excuse is sinful.

Abdullah Ibn Mas'ood may Allaah be pleased with him narrated the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Whoever would like to meet Allah, The Exalted, tomorrow as a Muslim, let him regularly offer these prayers where the call to the prayer is given, for Allah has prescribed the Sunan [plural of Sunnah] of guidance to your Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and they (the prayers) are among the Sunan of guidance. If you pray in your houses like this one who stays away from the mosque and prays in his house, you will have forsaken the Sunnah of your Prophet, and if you forsake the Sunnah of your Prophet you will go astray. There is no man who purifies himself well, then goes to one of these mosques, but that Allah will record one good deed for him for every step he takes, and will raise him in status one degree thereby, and will erase one bad deed thereby. I remember when no one would stay away from it but a hypocrite whose hypocrisy was known, and a man would come staggering between two others in order to stand in the row.” [Muslim]

Allah knows best.
