Wealth Left Behind Belongs to the Heirs

Question

Assalamualaykum. When a person dies, does that mean his inheritance include everything that he has? So we have to sell everything and then calculate the inheritance? Even the smallest thing?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Whatever a deceased leaves behind, whether it is little or big, is included in the inheritance. The inheritance should be divided amongst his heirs after fulfilling other rights, like debts, a will or the death-related expenses. Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Whoever leaves wealth behind, then it belongs to his heirs.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Allah knows best.
