Lying on the Job Application

Question

Hello sheik, if someone lied on their job application about drug use , would your income be haram?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Lying is one of the major grave sins and particularly if it leads to cheating or deceiving others. If one commits this sin, then they must ask forgiveness from Allah, regret what they did and be adamant not to do it again; Allah Says (what means): {So shun the uncleanliness of idols and shun false statement.} [Quran 22:30]

Also, the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) considered lying one of the major grave sins. (Al-Bukhaari and Muslim) The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) also said: “He who cheats us is not from us; trickery and deceit are in Hell.” [Ibn Hibbaan]

Whether or not the salary that one receives from the job he was hired to do is permissible; this depends on the nature of the job that the employee does. If the work, in principle, is permissible and he performs his job in the manner required from him, then the money he receives in return for this permissible work is lawful.

Allah knows best.
