Difference between prophets and messengers

Question

What is the difference between a prophet and a messenger?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

According to the majority of scholars, a prophet is the one who receives divine revelation but is not commanded to convey it to people, whereas a messenger is the one who is commanded to convey the divine revelation he has received to people.

It has also been said that the messenger is the one who is sent with new legislation, whereas the prophet is the one who comes as a follower of a previous set of legislations.

Allaah Knows best.
