Question

I see some people around me, who pray only in Friday's -Jumu'ah. Is this a good thing to do? Someone told me, if you don't pray 5 times a day, better not to pray in Friday alone. Is this correct to do? What did Prophet say about people who pray only on Friday?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

A person who only prays on Friday and does not perform other prayers, he/she has indeed committed a grave major sin.

Not performing the prayer takes the person out of the fold of Islam, as the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “The pact between us and them is the prayer. Whoever gives it up becomes an unbeliever.” [Ahmed, at-Thirmithi, an-Nassaa'i and others]

The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) also said regarding a person who did not perform one prayer only: “(... if someone does not perform it purposefully, the Ummah (nation) has no obligation towards him.” [Ibn Maajah and Al-Bayhaqi and narrated by Abu Ad-Dardaa’]

So the matter is even more serious for a person who does not perform five prayers each day and performs only the Friday prayer.

It is incumbent upon such people to fear Allah, and they should know that the One Who made the Friday prayer an obligation, is the One Who made all the other prayers obligatory; He is Allah.

As regards, the saying that whoever does not perform the five daily prayers, it is better for him not to perform the Friday prayer, then this is not correct. Rather, whoever does not perform the five daily prayers has to perform them, and perform Friday prayer as well.

Allah knows best.
