Meaning of the names Mahreen, Haneen and Sansabeel

Question

i would like to know the meaning of the names mehreen, haneen and sansabeel. can i give one of these names to my daughter. which one do u think is better islamically.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

We are not aware of the meaning of the name Mahreen or Sansabeel, as they are not Arabic names. As regards Salsabeel, with an 'l' instead of a 'n' then this is a name of a fountain in Paradise. Allaah Says (which means): {[From] a fountain within it [i.e. Paradise] named Salsabeel.}[Quran 76:18]. With regard to the meaning of Haneen, the author of Al-Mukhtaar said: "'Haneen' means longing and desire.''

We do not see any harm in naming your daughter with the above names; however, we do not know the meaning of Mahreen and Sansabeel.

For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 82724 on the desirability of giving good names to one's children, and Fatwa 87596 on the appropriate names for Muslim children.

Finally, we advise you to choose names other than those mentioned in the question, like the names of the wives of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) or his daughters, or the names of the female companions may Allaah be pleased with them or names of righteous and pious Muslim women, as these names remind a person about the biography of these noble people, and how much they were pious and righteous.

Allaah Knows best.
