Religion of children born to Muslim-Christian couple

Question

I am a Muslim with a Christian wife. What is the Islamic point of view regarding the religion of the our coming kids? Thank you.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Your children should be Muslims. In fact, the children of mixed couples should follow the better religion of either of their parents, and there is no doubt that the best religion is Islam. So, you should teach your children Islam and make sure that they start practicing its rites and conduct from an early age. You should make sure that no one interferes in this matter trying, for instance, to mislead your children by proposing to them a religion other than Islam. The responsibility which Allah has put on your shoulders will not be fulfilled unless you look after your children's religion, that is, Islam.

If there is no way to do this in the country where you live, you should migrate to a Muslim country in order to raise your children on the right religion.

Allah has made you in charge of them and He will ask you about them.

The Prophet Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said: “All of you are guardians and are responsible for your subjects. A ruler is a guardian of his subjects, a man is a guardian of his family, a woman is a guardian and is responsible for her husband's house and his offspring, and so all of you are guardians and are responsible for your subjects.

Allah Knows best.
