Most Important (Rewardable) Acts during Ramadan

Question

What are the recommended and significant acts of worship in the Prophet's Sunnah in the month of Ramadan? Please state according to importance and rewards in this world and Hereafter.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

There are no special requirements for the month of fasting (Ramadan) except what is needed for the fasting to be valid. The intention has to be made by night, and one has to abstain from eating, drinking and having sexual relationships (with his wife) during the whole day.

Some recommended and preferred requirements should be observed, along with staying away from what is forbidden or disliked. Also, one has to hasten to perform good deeds and acts of obedience.

As for the preferred things that should be observed during Ramadan, they are as follows:

- Having Suhur (pre-dawn meal), and it is preferable that it be delayed, except if one fears the beginning of the time of Fajr.

- Breaking the fast as soon as the sun sets with fresh dates, if not, with ripe dates, with water, and if one does not find any of these, then with any Halal food.

- Making a supplication when breaking the fast. At-Tirmithi reported that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "There are 3 kinds of people whose supplication are accepted, and he mentioned among them a fasting person when he breaks the fast."

Among the authentic supplications when breaking the fast is "Oh Allah, I fasted for you, and with your provision I broke the fast." [Narrated by Abu Daawood]

- To perform Taraweeh (night) prayers.

Allah knows best.
