Question:

Alsalamu Alaykom, 1-Is it true that the jews killed many prophets? Please name some of them. 2-Why did God allow some of his prophets to be killed knowing that he is the one who sent them and is able to protect them at any time? Thank you

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

Allaah informed us in the Quran that the Jews used to kill the Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention; Allaah Says (what means): {But is it [not] that every time a messenger came to you, [O Children of Israel], with what your souls did not desire, you were arrogant? And a party [of messengers] you denied and another party you killed.}[Quran 2:87] Allaah also Says (what means): {That was because they [repeatedly] disbelieved in the signs of Allaah and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and were [habitually] transgressing.}[Quran 2:61]

However, the names of the Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention, who were killed by the Jews were neither mentioned in the Quran nor in the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).

Nonetheless, the books of Tafseer (interpretation of the Quran) stated that the Prophet Zakariyah (Zechariah) and Yahya (John), may Allaah exalt their mention, were killed by the Jews.

Undoubtedly, Allaah was able to protect those Prophets, like He protected Ibraaheem (Abraham) may Allaah exalt his mention from the fire, and protected Ismaa’eel (Ishmael) may Allaah exalt his mention from being slaughtered, and protected ‘Eesa (Jesus) may Allaah exalt his mention from the children of Israel when they tried to kill him, and protected the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) from Quraysh. Allaah also protected Prophets Hoode, Saalih and Shu’ayb, may Allaah exalt their mention, from their people when they were belied by them. However, Allaah predestined that some Prophets, may Allaah exalt their mention, be killed for a wisdom which He only knows.

Examples for the reasons and wisdom behind not protecting some of them, is that the affliction which they suffered will increase their status and ranks, and then the severe punishment will be inflicted on those who killed them.

One the Day of Judgment, the most severe punishment will be inflicted on a person who killed a Prophet or who was killed by a Prophet, as reported in an authentic Prophetic narration.

Allaah Knows best.
