Question:

Salam, I heard from a Muslim food scientist that Grapeseed oil and Grapeseed extract are not halal. He said, "The source of grape seeds is not from grape because in order to obtained the grape seeds from grapes you have to destroy grapes which can be used for table grape purpose. So the only source of grape seeds is from when grapes is used to make wine. So they have to filter the grape seeds and it is utilized in making grape seed extract and grape seed oil. Both are not Halal." Is it really true that these products are not halal? Also, if it is halal, should my family feel bad for throwing them out, because it costed money since we brought them?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Grapeseed oil and anything that is extracted from grapes are pure and lawful like the grapes themselves unless something incidentally renders them impure or unlawful, like if they become intoxicating. Therefore, there is nothing wrong with using them because the seed and whatever is extracted from it are part of the grapes and it is pure and lawful.

However, there is no need for your family to feel bad for throwing out grapeseed oil and extract.

Allaah Knows best.
