Question:

As salamualaikum. I ask about the authenticity of a hadeeth which reads: "There will be men of my nation who will call people to the sayings of their monks and rabbis and will act upon them, and they will envy Muslims for the saying "Aamen" behind the Imaam, in the same way the Jews had envied you for that. Verily, they are the Jews of this nation, they are the Jews of this nation." This hadeeth is mentioned in jami all jawami of suyuti. Jazak ALLAH khair.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

There is no hadeeth with this wording in Jam‘ Al-Jawaami‘ (Al-Jaami‘ al-Kabeer) by As-Suyooti, and we have not found it in the books of Sunnah that we have at hand. It is possible that there is no source for this hadeeth at all.

We warn Muslims against attributing a statement to the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, that he did not make. Al-Mugheerah may Allaah be pleased with him said: I heard the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, say: "Telling an untruth about me is not like telling an untruth about anyone else; whoever deliberately tells an untruth about me, let him assume his place in Hellfire." [Al-Bukhaari and Muslim]

Allaah Knows best.
