Question:

assalaamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh, Is it haram to listen to music and watch shows on the phone on the toilet or in the shower?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ʻalayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

We have previously underlined the prohibition of listening to music in Fataawa 81545 and 81239. This ruling applies to listening to music in all places and at all times.

As for the ruling on watching videos in the bathroom or in the shower, if such videos are accompanied by music, then the ruling has already been mentioned above. If they are free of music and forbidden images and do not contain Thikr or verses of the Quran, there is no reason to prohibit watching them, provided that they would not cause the person to stay longer periods in the bathroom than needed. In this case, it is deemed disliked to watch such videos.

The Maaliki scholar ʻAli ibn Ahmad As-Saʻeedi Al-ʻAdawi may Allaah have mercy upon him wrote, “It is disliked to enter the bathroom while carrying any object bearing Quranic verses or Thikr that is not enveloped in some sort of a covering unless there is a necessity for it.” [Commentary on Al-Kharashi's Mukhtasar Khaleel]

The Hanbali scholar Ibn Muflih may Allaah have mercy upon him wrote, “Spending too much time relieving oneself causes severe illness.” [Al-Aadaab Ash-Sharʻiyyah]

Allaah Knows best.
