Ruling on applying substances with unknown components and its effect on prayer

Question:

What is the Sharee'ah ruling on a person who applies a substance whose components are unknown to him after Wudhu’ (ablution) and then prays?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

If this substance includes impure elements, such as wine, pig extracts, and so on, it is impermissible to use it or apply it to the skin. However, one should be certain of this first. If it is not certainly proved that these materials are impure or prohibited, the original ruling is that it is permissible to use them and that they do not negatively affect the prayer. However, if it is proven, with certainty, that they are harmful, then it is impermissible to use them due their harm, not due their effect on prayer.

Allaah Knows best.
