Lifting one's trousers up to the navel during prayer

Question:

IS IT NECCESARY TO WEAR THE PANT ABOVE BELLY BUTTONWHILE WE ARE TAKING PRAYER,MY FRIENDS USED TO SAY THAT NO MATTER IF THE PANT IS BELOW THE BELLY BUTTON

Answer:

All Perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as that of his family and all his companions.

It is an obligation and a condition for the prayer to be valid to cover the 'Awrah (parts of the body that must be covered in Islam). We have already clarified in Fatwa 85393 the 'Awrah of a man while performing the prayer, and that it is from the navel to the knee.

If the navel is covered with a long shirt and the like, then it is not a condition to lift the trousers up as the questioner stated. But if the navel is not covered, then it is an obligation to cover it by lifting the trousers to a level so that the navel (or what is below its level) is covered.

For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 81610.

Allaah Knows best.
