The martyrdom of Al-Husayn in Karbalaa'

Question

When Imam Hussein go to Karbala, why didn’t the great Sahabas of that period accompany him in his Jihad against Yazid?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The people of Al-Koofah asked Al-Husayn may Allaah be pleased with him to move to them, and they promised to back him and support him. He thought that it was a duty upon him to answer their call, especially as he did not approve of the pledge of allegiance that was given to Yazeed ibn Mu’aawiyah. This is why Al-Husayn may Allaah be pleased with him refused to pledge allegiance to Yazeed. Some Companions may Allaah be pleased with them did not approve of Al-Husayn’s departure to Al-Koofah and thought it was a mistake. Therefore, they did not accompany him. Al-Husayn may Allaah be pleased with him was killed in Karbalaa'. At the time of his death, he was the most noble and the best person on earth. However, that was his fate; to Allaah we belong, and to Him we return.

Allaah Knows best.
