Question

Where is Allaah The Almighty?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The followers of the Sunnah believe that Allaah The Almighty is firmly established over His Throne that is located above the heavens. Thus, Allaah The Almighty is above everything. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Do you feel secure that He, who is over the heaven (Allaah), will not cause the earth to sink with you?} [Quran 67:16]

If the heaven here refers to the well-known heavens or skies, then Allaah The Almighty is over them. However, there is no contradiction if the word heaven here refers to the state of loftiness. Indeed, the righteous predecessors among the Companions may Allaah be pleased with them and their successors may Allaah have mercy upon them who were the best of generations, unanimously believed that Allaah The Almighty Himself is above all of His creation.

As for the question "where is Allaah The Almighty", some scholars prohibited asking this, but the correct opinion is that it is permissible. Mu‘aawiyah Ibn Al-Hakam As-Sulami may Allaah be pleased with him struck his slave-girl and then consulted the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) , about setting her free. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) asked her 'where Allaah The Almighty is'. She replied that 'He is over the heavens.' He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) then asked her who he was. She replied that 'he was the Messenger of Allaah'. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) then told Mu‘aawiyah Ibn Al-Hakam to 'free her as she was a believer'. [Muslim]

Allaah Knows best.
