A superstitious belief about pets

Question

Salamolakum-is it true that when one is keeping pets (or birds), calamities befall on pets first then on humans?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We do not know any evidence in the noble Sunnah supporting this statement; rather, this is nothing but a superstition and not a reality.

However, among the most important means of repelling afflictions in one’s own self, money and family is supplication. Thawbaan may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Nothing repels predestination except Dua'a (supplication).” [Ahmad, At-Tirmithi and Ibn Maajah]

Moreover, ‘Uthmaan Ibn ‘Affaan may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Whoever says at the beginning of his day or at the beginning of his night: Bismi Allaahi Al-Lathi Laa Yadhurru Ma'a Ismihi Shay'un Fil-Ardhi Walaa Fis-Samaa'i Wahowa As-Samee' Al-'Aleem) [In the Name of Allaah with whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause any harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing (three times), nothing will harm him on that day or that night.

Allaah Knows best.
