Polytheistic love sickness…

Question

What is polytheistic love sickness? Is obeying a person in committing a sin because of loving him considered polytheism?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

Allaah Says (what means): {And [yet], among the people are those who take other than Allaah as equals [to Him]. They love them as they [should] love Allaah. But those who believe are stronger in love for Allaah.} [Quran 2:165]

Thus we are commanded to direct our utmost love and submission exclusively to Allaah. If a person’s love and obedience for another reaches the extent whereby he disobeys Allaah The Exalted, then this person becomes a polytheist. Ibn Al-Qayyim may Allaah have mercy upon him wrote insightful comments on this issue, saying that an indication of polytheistic love sickness is when the satisfaction of the beloved is given higher priority than that of Allaah The Almighty; the rights of the beloved contradict the rights and obedience to Allaah The Exalted; the pleasure of the beloved is preferred over the pleasure of Allaah, the most precious things are sacrificed to the beloved but his Lord is given the worst, if anything at all; and utmost efforts are given to obey and draw nearer to the beloved, while only the remaining time is allocated to his Lord.

Allaah Knows best.
