Jibreel's (Gabriel) descent after the Prophet’s death

Question

Will Jibreel, may Allaah exalt his mention, descend to earth even after the demise of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

If the questioner means by this that Jibreel may Allaah exalt his mention will descend with revelation, then this is incorrect. This is because revelation ceased after the demise of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. On the authority of Anas may Allaah be pleased with him Umm Ayman may Allaah be pleased with her cried after the death of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, because of the cessation of revelation and told Abu Bakr and ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with them about this matter. They, in turn, also cried with her. [Muslim]

However, if the questioner means Jibreels’ descent without revelation, then this is possible at any time. In fact, some scholars commented on the verses (which mean):

• {The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.}[Quran 97: 4]

• {The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.}[Quran 70: 4]

They said that the ‘Spirit’ in these verses refers to Jibreel may Allaah exalt his mention. This opinion is supported by another verse in which Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down.}[Quran 26: 193]

And Allaah Knows best.
