A son stealing money from his father

Question

I do steal my father money, because when i ask him to give me certain amount, he never give me, even the money he gives me for food is never enough, have i committed sin by taking his money?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Stealing is forbidden in Islam and it is one of the grave major sins. If a son steals his father's money, then this combines stealing along with not being dutiful to his father. Therefore, whoever does this must repent to Allaah The Almighty and return the money that he stole to his father in any manner even without his father's knowledge.

If a father does not give his son what he asks for, then this does not allow his son to steal or take his money without his knowledge. However, if a father is obliged to spend on his son and refrains from doing so, then in this case his son is permitted to take from his money without his knowledge. It should be noted that a father is not obligated to spend on his son unless the son is poor, has no money and is unable to earn his own living. The Islamic obligatory spending is only in regard to necessities and is not as many people think that a child is given anything he asks for.

Al-Hajjaawi may Allaah have mercy upon him said: “The obligation in regard to spending on a relative is to provide him with sufficient bread, food to eat with the bread, clothing and accommodation according to what is customary.”

Allaah Knows best.
