There is wisdom behind affliction and believers must submit

Question

I have two mentally retarded daughters. I have performed hereditary tests, but all doctors told me that the reason for their condition is not heredity. Some people advised me to renew the marriage contract with my wife in order to drive away envy. What is your opinion?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Allaah The Almighty afflicts his slaves with whatever afflictions He wills for a great hidden wisdom and it is the duty of believers to submit to Allaah and be satisfied with what Allaah has determined. It was mentioned that ‘Uthmaan may Allaah be pleased with him when he was injured and bleeding to death, said, “There is no deity other than You, Exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers. O Allaah, I seek help from You against them and for all matters. I ask You to grant me patience for what You have afflicted me with.”

Indeed a believer should know that there are other people who are afflicted with greater things. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you [for the cause of Allaah] and the patient, and We will test your affairs.} [Quran 47:31]

Regarding renewing the marriage contract, this idea is totally incorrect. If the matter relates to envy, then you have to make lawful Ruqyah (Quranic treatment) for yourself and your wife by reading Chapter Al-Falaq and Chapter An-Naas, for instance [Chapters 113 and 114 of the Quran].

We ask Allaah to grant you righteous descendents.

Allaah Knows best.
