Ruling on writing with the left hand

Question

Is there any wrong with writing with the left hand. What should one do if they are left handed.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

We expect that there is nothing wrong with writing with the left hand and if one finds it difficult to write with his right hand. Nonetheless, it is better to train oneself to write with the right hand.

Imaam Ibn Baaz may Allaah have mercy upon him was asked: "Is it permissible for me to write the Names of Allaah with the left hand because I am left-handed?" He replied: "There is nothing wrong with it because you have an excuse, but if someone can write with his right hand, then the Sunnah is that he should write with his right hand." [End of quote]

Moreover, the prominent scholar ‘Abdul Muhsin Al-‘Abbaad Al-Badr was asked, as appears in his commentary on Abu Daawood's Sunan, about the judgment on writing with the left hand? He replied: "If a person is in need of writing with his left hand or if one is used to it, then it is permissible; but if one can write with his right hand, then he should not use his left hand if he is able to use his right hand." [End of quote]

Allaah Knows best.
