Procrastination in wearing hijaab

Question

I converted to Islam one year ago. Since then, I have stopped drinking alcohol, started praying, started studying, and done many more things. My husband is angry about the fact that I do not wear a hijab yet. I want to wear the hijab, but I need some time to mentally prepare for that. He does not accept it and tells me that I am not honest in my faith and that if I do not start wearing it now I am a big liar about my convertion to Islam (which is absolutely not true). I need him to give me space and time so I can also prepare my non-Muslim family. He does not understand the struggles of a convert at all and even talks about divorcing me based on this matter and on the fact that I regularly visit my non-Muslim family during their religious holidays (even though they are not practicing their religion on those days, they are just Chistians "by name"). What is your opinion on my husband's behaviour? It is important to note that I am five-months-pregnant of our first child. I hope you can answer me soon.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

First of all, praise be to Allah, who conferred His favors upon you and enabled you to embrace Islam and guided you to His true Religion and His straight Path. This is indeed the greatest blessing and favor.

We ask Allah to make you firm on this true religion and enable you to be grateful for this blessing.

You should know that your husband's keenness that you hasten to start wearing the hijaab is the correct attitude that is in compliance with the Shariah (Islamic Law), and it reflects the required jealousy of a man over his wife and his responsibility of being her guardian and protector.

Therefore, you are obliged to hasten to wear the hijaab and not procrastinate on the grounds of preparing your family for this matter. Your obedience to your Lord and compliance with the Shariah comes in priority over everything else. Life is short ,and death comes suddenly. For more benefit, please refer to fatwa 83765.

As regards visiting your family, this is permissible provided that this does not spoil your religion and does not constitute a participation in their non-Muslim festivals.

Allah knows best.
