Angels Descended With Spears During Abu Bakr's Time

Question

I have heard the following narration from a scholar is this incident authentic or any similar incident and if yes what is the reference to this and in which book it is taken from : In the first war of Syria, there was a regiment of 8,000 people with Amr Bin Aas [ra]. It was the first war in the reign of Abu Bakr Siddique [ra]. Romans were 100,000 in number and the Sahaba were merely 8,000. The attack of Romans was sudden therefore the Sahaba could not recoup and they became surrounded by Romans. 100,000 surrounded 8000. Amongst them is a great Sahabi by the name of Wathilah Bin Asqa [ra]. He narrates: “It was such an horrific scene that we totally forgot about poetry.” Hazrat Watillah narrates: “We totally forgot about poetry.” And the whole crowed of 8,000 people had only one sentence on their tongues, “Ya Rabba Muhammad! Unsur Ummata Muhammad.” Translation, “O Lord of Muhammad, help the Ummah of Muhammad.” and the sky tore apart and horsemen showed up from skies with spears in their hands.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The story that you mentioned is not reported in any of the books of history or biography. It is like the stories of storytellers who narrate strange things and what does not have any basis.

The sign of lying is apparent in it, as the first war during the era of Abu Bakr may Allaah be pleased with him was not with the Romans; rather, it was a war against the Arab tribes who apostated from Islam.

Also, the angels did not descend from heaven after the death of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) and people did not see them. Actually, even in the battles of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) where the angels actually came down, it was not reported that the companions saw them with spears or anything else.

Allah knows best.
