When someone with mental illness is scheduled for an important interview in Ramadhaan and thus he needs to take medication in order to be able to express himself, what is the Sharee‘ah ruling on breaking the fast in such a case?

Accepted Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.

Breaking the fast is impermissible in this case, since fasting does not represent hardship for him. He can take the medicine he needs at night. On the other hand, breaking the fast because of an interview, whether it is important or not is not a Sharee‘ah-approved excuse to abandon fasting.
