Saying I Will Do Such-and-Such Or Will Not Do Such-and-Such Is Not A Binding Oath That Necessitates Expiation

Question

During this pandemic, i made alot of oaths and vows regarding the future. That i will do this and that, while making dua in prayer i said these things now im not sure if i will be able to fulfill them. While making dua i hear whispers to make me feel guilty of the tiniest things that i do and i vow not to do them but now i feel like i shouldnt have made this vow or oath. In my heart i knew i didnt want to but my guilt made me. I also get alot of evil thoughts while prayer and reciting quran

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Mere unspoken inner thoughts and self-talk are not enough to render an oath binding as per the Sharee‘ah. Moreover, just saying that you will do such-and-such is not considered a binding oath whose breaking entails offering expiation. If you verbalized the oath with an explicit wording under the influence of whisperings or you broke your oath under the influence of such whisperings, you are not liable for any expiation either, because a person who suffers from whisperings takes the same ruling as that of a compelled person (i.e. he will not be held accountable for it). Lastly, we would like to advise you to strive in repelling and disregarding such whisperings because giving in to them leads you to grave evil.

Allah Knows best.
