Question

Assalaamu alaykum Please provide me with the full hadith (source and authenticity) for the following: “If you are content with what Allah has given you, you will be the richest person.”Jazakallaahu khayr

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The Hadith in question is recorded by Imam Ahmed in his Al-Musnad and At-Tirmidhi in his Sunan from the Hadith of Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him who narrated that the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said, “Who will take these statements from me, so that he may act upon them, or teach one who will act upon them?” So Abu Hurairah may Allaah be pleased with him said: “I said: 'I shall O Messenger of Allah!' So He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) took my hand and enumerated five (things), He said: “Be on guard against the unlawful and you shall be the most worshiping among the people, be satisfied with what Allah has allotted for you and you shall be the richest of the people, be kind to your neighbor and you shall be a believer, love for the people what you love for yourself and you shall be a Muslim. And do not laugh too much, for indeed increased laughter kills the heart.

In light of the various narrations of this Hadith, Al-Albaani classified it as a Good Hadith; see As-Silsilah As-Saheehah; Hadith No. 930.

Allah knows best.
