Prophet's performance of Hajj and ‘Umrah

Question

How many times did our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) perform Hajj and Umrah?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) performed only one Hajj after his migration to Madeenah and it was in the tenth year of Hijrah. The scholars hold various opinions concerning whether he ever performed Hajj before his migration to Madeenah. Some of them assume that he performed Hajj twice before his migration, according to the Hadeeth of Jaabir may Allaah be pleased with him who said that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) performed three Hajjs, two before migration and one after it, i.e. the Farewell Hajj. He performed ‘Umrah four times.

Anas may Allaah be pleased with him relates that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) performed four 'Umrahs, all in the month of Thul-Qi'dah, except the one which he sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) performed with his Hajj (i.e. in Thul-Hijjah). He sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) performed one 'Umrah from Hudaybiyyah in Thul-Qi'dah, another 'Umrah in the following year in Thul Qi'dah, a third from Al-Jiranah where he distributed the war booty of Hunayn in Thul Qi'dah, and the fourth 'Umrah he performed was with his Hajj.

Imaam Ibn Al-Qayyim may Allaah have mercy upon him said, “All the four Umrahs were in the month of Thul-Qi'dah. The first was at the occasion of pledge of Hudaybiyyah in the sixth year. The second was the next year of Hudaybiyyah, the third was with his Farewell Hajj and the fourth was when he performed from Al-Jiranah when he was returning from Hunayn.” [Za'd-Al-Ma'aad].

Allaah Knows best.
