Question

What is concept of man in Islam?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The word “man” is used to mean a human male, the opposite of woman. It is also used to mean one who is distinguished by good morals and who follows strictly The Divine Guidance. Both meanings are clearly stated in the Quran.

As to the first meaning, Allah Says (what means): {And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them in burden.} [Quran 72: 6]

As for the second meaning, which is more common, Allah Says (what means):

• {Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves.} [Quran 9: 108]

• {[Such niches are] in mosques which Allah has ordered to be raised and that His name be mentioned therein; exalting Him within them in the morning and the evenings. [Are] men whom neither commerce nor sale distracts from the remembrance of Allah and performance of prayer and giving of zakah. They fear a Day in which the hearts and eyes will [fearfully] turn about.} [Quran 24: 36-37]

• {And a believing man from the family of Pharaoh who concealed his faith said, "Do you kill a man [merely] because he says, 'My Lord is Allah' while he has brought you clear proofs from your Lord?} [Quran 40: 28]

Manhood, according to the second concept, means faith, truth, sacrifice, generosity, courage and loyalty.

Allah knows best.
