How to Call Jews and Christians
Fatwa No: 86337

Question

Did Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) use Bible for Da'wah? Some learned people are doing Da'wah by using Bible by pointing out the errors and contradictions in the Bible that it is creating ill feelings among Christians. Is this the right way to do Da'wah to Christians?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The Prophet's sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) approach in inviting the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) to Islam was based on the common grounds that exist between Islam and both Christianity and Judaism. Allah Says (what means): {And do not argue with the People of the Scripture except in a way that is best, except for those who commit injustice among them, and say, “We believe in that which has been revealed to us and revealed to you. And our God and your God is one; and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him.”.} [Quran 29:46]

The Quranic verses which involve reminders for the People of the Book of what Allah has revealed to them in the Torah and the Gospel are numerous. As to the falsification and alteration they introduced into their Books, the Quran frequently mentions that matter and considers it as one of the bases for inviting them to Islam.

Allah Says (what means):

• {So for their breaking of the covenant We cursed them and made their hearts hard. They distort words from their [proper] usages and have forgotten a portion of that of which they were reminded.} [Quran 5:13]

• {Among the Jews are those who distort words from their [proper] usages and say, “We hear and disobey” and “Hear but be not heard” and “Ra'ina,” twisting their tongues and defaming the religion. And if they had said [instead], “We hear and obey” and “Wait for us [to understand],” it would have been better for them and more suitable. But Allah has cursed them for their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few.} [Quran 4:46]

• {and from among the Jews. [They are] avid listeners to falsehood, listening to another people who have not come to you. They distort words beyond their [proper] usages, saying “If you are given this, take it; but if you are not given it, then beware.”} [Quran 5:41]

As well as many other verses in this regard. As to the question “which of the two approaches to be better followed in calling them; is it focusing on the common grounds or on the interpolations that are abundant in their Books”, then the answer to it is that the Quran adopts both ways. Each group is to be faced with the approach which is more appropriate and beneficial for them.

Allah knows best.
