Commuting and fasting during Ramadan

Question

I commute everyday more than 100 miles to go to my university. In Ramadan can I break my fast as a result of travelling?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The majority of the scholars are of the opinion that travelling the distance of 83 km or more one way only makes it lawful for the traveling person to break the fast and shorten the prayer. So, if the person travels daily for 100 km (one way), he can shorten the prayer and break the fast. But if this distance of 100 km is the entire distance the person travels, that is to say if 50 km are one way and the remaining 50 km are the return trip, then he/she has no right to shorten the prayer or break the fast.

Allah knows best.
