Use of permanent hair dyes

Question

Some women dye their hair using semi-permanent hair colours which wash out after several washings similar to coloring with henna. However, permanent hair colour solutions do not wash out but grow out as the hair grows longer. What is the ruling on using permanent hair dyes?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

It is lawful to use hair colours from all types and in all conditions provided one does not use black. Scholars differ on the issue of using black; some believe it is dislikable while others believe it is forbidden.

The evidence for this is that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) when he ordered to change the colour of the grey hair, warned against using black. This is reported in a sound Hadith narrated by Muslim.

Allah knows best.
