Plaiting women's hair with rubber and thread

Question

I want to know the Islamic ruling on a woman plaiting her hair with rubber or thread to beautify her. Secondly I want to know the Islamic ruling on the celebration of Maulid Naby (the Prophet's (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) birthday).

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

There is no Shariah objection to the fact that a woman plaits her hair with rubber or thread as long as they are made of lawful, safe and pure things. Doing so is not considered as tying something to the hair to lengthen it. As regards celebrating the Prophet's (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) birthday, it is unlawful. It is even considered a Bid'ah (bad innovation in Shariah). Was this act good, the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) would have done it. Neither the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) nor his companions or their rightly guided successors ever celebrated this event.

Indeed, the first Muslims used to love the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) much more than those who succeeded them. So, if they knew that such a celebration was a good act, they would have done it in the best way possible. Now, that they avoided this act, this is clear evidence that the avoidance of such an act is the right thing to do, and that its performance is a bad innovation.

Allah knows best.
