Question

What is Thikr? I have been looking for answer for some years now and hopefully will get it.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The term Ath-Thikr (remembrance) has many meanings in the Arabic language, however, the most common meaning in religion is that it means the mention of Allaah by reading the Qur'an, glorifying Allaah with Tasbeeh (Subhaanallaah, i.e. Glory be to Allaah), praising Allaah with Tahmeed (Al-Hamdulillaah, i.e. all Perfect Praise be to Allaah), exalting Allaah with Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar, i.e. Allaah is the Greatest) and Tahleel (Laa ilaaha illallaah, i.e. there is None worthy of worship but Allaah), or supplicating Allaah, performing prayers, and so on.

We have already issued many Fataawa regarding the types of the mention of Allaah and its excellence and its times, so you may refer to Fataawa: 88296, 86204, 84771, 85626 and 85350.

Allaah knows best.
