Briefly becoming partially exposed while making Tawaaf

Question

A man's Izaar partly falls off during Tawaaf and some of his nakedness shows. He covers himself quickly. Does he have to repeat the round (shawt) only or does he have to start the Tawaaf all over?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

Covering the 'Awrah (parts of the body that must be covered in Islam) is a condition for the validity of the Tawaaf according to the majority of scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them. The evidence is that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Tawaaf (circumambulation) around the Ka'bah is considered like the prayer." [Ahmad]

Since covering the 'Awrah is a condition for the validity of the prayer, it is also a condition for the validity of Tawaaf. So the ruling on whoever reveals some of his 'Awrah during Tawaaf is the same as the ruling on whoever reveals his 'Awrah in prayer. The most correct opinion in this regard is that whoever reveals some of his 'Awrah during Tawaaf without negligence from his part and covers himself on the spot, his Tawaaf is valid and he does not have to do it again.

Imaam An-Nawawi may Allaah have mercy upon him said: 'According to our school (Shaafi'ee), he completes the Tawaaf without starting from the beginning, and if his 'Awrah is revealed without any negligence on the part of the person and covers himself on the spot, then his Tawaaf is valid and his prayer is valid.'

Allaah knows best.
