Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The Prophetic narration you referred to in your question is reported by Al-Bazzaar may Allaah have mercy upon him and narrated by Ibn 'Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with him who said: 'The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "The angels do not approach three kinds of people: a person who requires Ghusl (a ritual bath) because of sexual defilement, a drunkard, and a person who applied Khalooq." Al-Mubaarak Puuri may Allaah have mercy upon him said in his commentary on At-Tirmithi: 'Khalooq is a kind of perfume produced of saffron and other ingredients.'

Many Prophetic narrations have been reported on it, some narrations permit it and some others prohibit it for men. Al-Mubaarak Puuri may Allaah have mercy upon him said: 'The prohibition of Khalooq is more confirmed.' Whereas Al-'Atheem Abaadi may Allaah have mercy upon him said: 'Its dislikeability is in relation to males only.'

It is prohibited for men because it is peculiar to women. Indeed the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) prohibited men from resembling women.

The scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them differed in opinion whether the prohibition that is mentioned in the narration means that it is forbidden or that it is only dislikeable. However, in order to be on the safe side, it is better for men to avoid perfume produced with saffron and it is better to avoid selling it to a man if one thinks that he will use it for himself.

Allaah Knows best.
